The view looking south from Eagle's Point. I didn't see any eagles, but there were some ospreys hanging around.

Fishing Dick's Lake

Fishing Dick's Lake

My dad fishing the outlet of Dick's Lake high in the Desolation Wilderness backcountry. Still a lot of snow up there, even in mid-August.

High Country Jewels

High Country Jewels

In steep, high country streams swollen with snowmelt, a 10-inch fish is a trophy, and every single one, regardless of size, is a jewel. These tiny brookies are true survivors, braving icy currents at 8,500 feet while competing for what precious little food is available in this extreme environment. As a result, they're pretty easy to catch. Just dapple a dry fly in the froth of a plunge pool, or pull a little spinner through the deepest, fastest water, and you will soon see that unforgettable flash of red-orange followed by the tug of life at the end of your line.

My dad fishing the high country, a magical place situated nicely between reality and heaven.

August Snowmelt

August Snowmelt

Looking south across Dick's Lake at sunset. One of the neatest things about camping up here was the ambient sound of August snowmelt flowing across granite on its way into the lake. There was always a soft, soothing rush echoing throughout the cirque. Can't beat it.

The bottoms of open conifer cones are one of many places in nature where you'll find fractals.

The Day is Done

The Day is Done

As Gunther slept soundly in the tent, I walked up the ridge and watched the day's last light fade into the black and blue of night.

Camp at Twilight

Camp at Twilight

One of my favorite moments from this trip. Here is our camp at last light, with the night's first stars beginning to twinkle, and the rush of snowmelt singing us to sleep.

Super Beast

Super Beast

Little Gunther, only slightly worse for wear after three days and three nights in the backcountry at 8,500 feet. Love this guy.
